New York Liberty Celebrate 2024 WNBA Championship with Banner and Ring Ceremony
The New York Liberty made history as they celebrated their first WNBA championship with a banner and ring ceremony before their 2025 season opener against the Las Vegas Aces at Barclays Center. The green championship banner was raised to the rafters, marking a memorable moment for the team and its fans. Players watched in awe as the banner found its place above the court, symbolizing their hard-fought victory in the previous season. Minutes later, the players were presented with their championship rings, with star player Breanna Stewart receiving hers alongside her young children, Ruby and Theo. This was Stewart’s third title, but the first one her kids got to witness. The crowd erupted in applause as Sabrina Ionescu, the No. 1 draft pick in 2020, was introduced and thanked the fans for their support.
New York Liberty, the last of the original franchises to win a championship, achieved their historic feat by defeating the Minnesota Lynx in a thrilling overtime Game 5 last year. Co-owner Clara Wu Tsai expressed her pride in the team, highlighting their representation of New York City’s spirit of creativity, grit, hustle, and resilience. She promised that this would be the first of many championships for the Liberty.
On the other side, the Las Vegas Aces remained in their locker room during the ceremony. Coach Becky Hammon, a former Liberty player, shared her respect for the organization and acknowledged the Liberty as the deserving champions. Chelsea Gray, a three-time champion, recalled a similar experience with the Los Angeles Sparks and expressed her determination to spoil the Liberty’s celebration by securing a win on their ring night.
